
The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme is a one of the largest scale initiatives that invites foreign youths to various areas in Japan as teaching assistants of foreign language education, aiming to amplify the quality of foreign language education and promoting the cultural exchange. The BOE is very active on this initiative.
BOE sends Japanese teachers of English to foreign universities for several months to learn the latest English teaching methods, as part of the teachers’ professional development, including international understanding.
The BOE designates 10 public high schools in Tokyo, wherein to facilitate advanced projects for global human resources development of high schools.
The BOE promotes international educational exchange of public schools in Tokyo includes sister-school exchange between public high schools in Tokyo and foreign schools, invitation of foreign students to public high schools in Tokyo, and education for Olympic and Paralympic games in all public schools located in Tokyo.
In addition to English education, human development of resources who have the capability of various foreign languages is also important policy agenda. The BOE provides foreign language teachers in after school activities of public high schools and lessons of foreign languages for public high schools.
The BOE published a unique English educational material titled Welcome to Tokyo in FY 2015. This material enables students to develop an understanding of Japanese history and culture and communicate these concepts with English language. The BOE delivered these materials to all public students above 5th year of elementary school.
In 2019 the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education began implementing its "Diverse Link Tokyo Edu" initiative designed to provide more advanced and more creative inquiry-based learning through social and worldwide relationships in order to foster a more global citizenship compatible with the new era. This initiative was selected as a project to support the building of the WWL (World Wide Learning) Consortium, a new 2019 endeavor sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
